Watch the Teaser for Cait Brennan’s Psychedelic Soul-Glam Barnburner “Third”
Trans glam-soul powerhouse Cait Brennan was one of 2016’s biggest surprises, when her self-released debut Debutante landed on a variety of Best Of 2016 lists including Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop. After an eventful and tumultuous year in which she nearly died (from a cat bite, of all things), recorded demos with guests like James King of Fitz and the Tantrums for a Sire/Warner Bros deal that fell through, then recorded and shelved a fine second album, most people might take a break. Instead, Brennan signed with well-regarded LA-based boutique label Omnivore Recordings, ran off to the fabled Ardent Studios in Memphis and recorded her new record, Third, in a blazing two and a half days, in the same room and using the same gear as Big Star used on their own Third. Ardent head and Big Star drummer Jody Stephens blessed the sessions and offered advice and encouragement as Brennan and longtime co-producer and instrumental genius Fernando Perdomo laid down the new songs using vintage instruments like Chris Bell’s Gibson guitar and Alex Chilton’s Mellotron. This teaser trailer from Omnivore features clips from two of those songs, the riotous “Benedict Cumberbatch”, in which Brennan gives the kiss-off to an unworthy ex by giving his song to the Doctor Strange dreamboat instead, and the brutally funny “Bad At Apologies,” which may set a new record for best opening line on any album in recent memory (“Yeah, I’m the a–hole who stole your boyfriend.”) The album drops April 21, with a release show at Memphis’ Bar DKDC on May 9th with Stephens, Van Duren, and other Memphis legends in the lineup.
