About Monique Maion
It’s nearly impossible to box Brazilian singer-songwriter Monique Maion in one specific genre. Jazz, psychedelic rock, soul, bossa nova and blues all co-exist in her candid music, combining freewheeling personality and sensual singing with melancholic lyrics written both in Portuguese and English. With influences ranging from Ella Fitzgerald and Tom Waits to the groundbreaking Tropicália group Os Mutantes, Maion creates a unique and energetic sound that is felt as soon as she strikes her first note.
She cut her teeth by making moves in the underground music scene of São Paulo and learned about the meaning of standing on the stage by sharing the line-up with legendary artists such as Iggy Pop, Primal Scream, Sonic Youth and The Jesus & Mary Chain. Versatile, she has also worked on movie soundtracks and performed in fashion shows, corporate events and commercials. Her last album, Monique Maion feat Os Fellas (2014), achieved great critical success, and was featured on Rolling Stone, MTV, L’Officiel, among others.
In 2014, she moved from São Paulo to Venice Beach on a spiritual journey for her inner voice.
MM’s new single “Painho” has just been released. It is the title track of her upcoming solo album recorded in LA.
“Monique Maion’s new single, Painho, will make you feel like drinking cachaça – the highly boozy Brazilian spirit – all night long.” —Tatiana Cesso – Journalist
